Who can apply
School of Choice is for children who live inside CVUSD and want a CVUSD school other than their neighborhood school. The district says all its schools are Schools of Choice. Families apply online and can list a first and a second choice. A student who is new to CVUSD first completes online pre-enrollment with the neighborhood school. Families who live outside the district use the Inter-District Transfer process instead (School Choice, published September 24, 2026).
To see which school is your neighborhood school, enter your address in the district's Find My Assigned School map.

How seats are given
- A school takes choice students only after seating its current students and its incoming neighborhood students.
- If on-time applications outnumber the open seats, the district holds a random lottery.
- The only priority the page names is Priority 1, for students returning to their school of residence.
- Late applications are handled case by case and go to the bottom of the school's waitlist, in the order received.
- Waitlisted families aren't contacted again unless their child is approved.
What accepting a seat means
Accepting a choice seat gives up the seat at the neighborhood school, and the chosen school becomes the student's school of residence. Going back to the original school takes a new School of Choice application. The district's timeline lists separate applications for elementary, middle and high school, so moving up a level may mean applying again; ask the district if your child is finishing 5th or 8th grade at a choice school.
There's no bus: "No transportation is provided for school choice applicants." Plan the drive before you apply.
Looking at schools
Each CVUSD school with a page on this site has its programs, math placement, test scores and key dates:
- Thousand Oaks elementary schools: Acacia Magnet School, Aspen, Conejo Academy, Glenwood, Ladera STARS Academy, Lang Ranch, Madroña Academy, Weathersfield and Wildwood.
- Newbury Park elementary schools: Banyan, Cypress, EARThS Magnet School, Maple and Walnut.
- Westlake Village elementary schools: Westlake and Westlake Hills.
- Middle schools: Colina, Los Cerritos, Redwood and Sequoia, plus the TK–8 Sycamore Canyon School.
Test scores for every school are side by side on the Conejo Valley test scores page. A single year of scores says little about a school on its own; visiting, and asking how the school handles the subject your child finds hardest, tells you more.
If you live outside CVUSD, the neighboring districts run their own processes: Oak Park Unified District of Choice for families outside Oak Park, and Las Virgenes Unified permits, covered in the Westlake Village district guide.
