About Banyan

Banyan Elementary, home of the Bobcats, teaches about 415 students from TK through 5th grade on Knollwood Drive in Newbury Park, on a campus with views of Mt. Boney (Ed-Data, Banyan). Its homepage lists it as a 2025 California Distinguished School, recognized for Exceptional Student Performance, and its motto is "Effort Equals Success" (Banyan).

Students have art and music classes, including chorus, band and strings, and Art of the Masters is one of the school's listed programs, along with GATE, library and technology. Banyan also has special day classes at TK/K, grades 1–3 and grades 4–5, and after-school classes are offered through the Conejo Recreation and Park District (CRPD) (Banyan).

Art of the Masters is a parent-delivered art history program: each class has a parent volunteer Art Docent who teaches the children about artists and their work, and students make projects based on the artist they're studying (Art of the Masters). The school's mission is "Building the Future Through Personal Growth and Academic Success," and its classrooms use flexible seating (Banyan).

In 2026–27, Banyan's day runs from 8:25 am to 2:35 pm for grades 1–5, and TK and kindergarten end at 1:30 pm. There's no weekly early-release day; parent conferences and the last day are minimum days that end at 12:30 pm (bell schedule). Banyan addresses feed Sequoia Middle School in CVUSD's street index.

Subjects that fit Banyan students

Banyan students move on to Sequoia, where every student is in the IB Middle Years Programme and much of the work is written and project-based. Writing sessions in 4th and 5th grade build toward that, and elementary math covers the 5th-grade grades and tests CVUSD weighs for 6th-grade math placement. For the younger grades, reading and phonics is the starting point.
