Middle School Math and Algebra 1 Tutoring
Middle school math tutoring is one-on-one or small-group teaching in grade 6–8 math, and in Algebra 1 for 7th and 8th graders taking it. At Thousand Acorns Tutoring, Adriana, a California-credentialed teacher, teaches every session herself, in your home, online or in a small group of 2–4. Tutoring is $80 an hour in your home or online, or $50 an hour per child in a group, and the first consultation is free.
What 6–8 math covers, by grade
| Grade | Domains | The main work of the year |
|---|---|---|
| 6th | Ratios and Proportional Relationships; The Number System; Expressions and Equations; Geometry; Statistics and Probability | Ratios and rates, dividing fractions, negative numbers, writing and solving expressions and equations, area and volume, early statistics |
| 7th | The same five domains | Proportional relationships and percents, operations with negative numbers and fractions, linear equations, scale drawings, surface area and volume, sampling |
| 8th | The Number System; Expressions and Equations; Functions; Geometry; Statistics and Probability | Linear equations and systems, functions, transformations and the Pythagorean Theorem |
Domains are from the grade 6, grade 7 and grade 8 standards, which California adopted. In California's standards, Algebra I is a high school course. Local middle schools offer it in 8th grade, or in 7th, to students who qualify.

How she teaches math
In her words: "Everything is different per student and the grade they are in, but I will focus on whatever hands-on training and education they will need to get ahead." Her sessions are hands-on and keep students engaged, with positive reinforcement and connections to real life.
A private tutor or a learning center
Mathnasium teaches K–12 math only, in its centers or online, on a "flat monthly membership" with no published price. Kumon teaches its own math and reading program, at $170–$190 per subject per month locally. A private tutor can work from your child's own class: the current unit, the homework, the next test. Center details are from their own pages, opened October 13, 2026.
When families usually start
- At progress reports. CVUSD middle schools sent the first ones on September 18, 2026; the first quarter ends October 16, and the next progress reports go home November 13.
- Before spring placement. Oak Park gives its Algebra readiness tests in March or April. CVUSD's June Challenge and Boost Exams had a May 15 registration deadline in 2026.
- Before Algebra 1. The guide to being ready for Algebra 1 lists the skills it builds on.
Progress
At the end of every session, she goes over with you what your child covered, so you know what they're supposed to be learning. Tutoring can't guarantee a grade, a test score or a placement.
