About Sequoia
Sequoia Middle School, home of Timber the Bear, sits on Borchard Road in Newbury Park, and its students go on to Newbury Park High School (Sequoia, street index). In June 2026 CVUSD announced that Sequoia had been authorized for the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP), which the district says completes the first TK–12 IB continuum in Ventura County, from Cypress Elementary through Newbury Park High (CVUSD news).
Every Sequoia student in grades 6–8 is in the MYP, which spans eight subject areas. Spanish is the language-acquisition subject, and Design is a hands-on class built on a four-step cycle: investigate, plan, create and evaluate. All 8th graders present at an IB Showcase that families are invited to (Sequoia IB).
The school day has its own rhythm. CREW, a class built on the IB Learner Profile, meets after lunch on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; every Tuesday is a minimum day ending at 1:30 pm; and the calendar alternates "1,2,3" and "4,5,6" days. Electives include band, strings, choir, guitar, art, digital production, computer science and yearbook, and students produce a podcast called KA19 (Sequoia).

Math placement for Sequoia students
After 6th-grade placement, a CVUSD student moves up a level only with 70% or better on a Boost Exam: Math 6CP to Math 7 Honors (6CP to 7H letter), or Math 7CP to Algebra 1 CP in 8th grade (7CP to Algebra 1 letter). In 2026 both exams were offered June 15 and July 31 at Colina, with free Boost Camps July 6–31; the 2027 dates aren't posted yet (Middle School Education). The guides to CVUSD placement and Boost Exams explain the courses. Thousand Acorns Tutoring does not offer placement exam prep.

Key dates for Sequoia families, 2026–27
CVUSD's 2026–27 year runs from August 19, 2026 to June 11, 2027, with spring break March 29 – April 2 (CVUSD calendar). The CVUSD calendar guide lists every day off, minimum day and deadline.
Subjects that fit Sequoia students
In the MYP, classroom teachers mark work against the IB's published assessment criteria for each subject group (IB), and much of that work is written: reflections, design-cycle projects and, in 8th grade, a showcase presentation. Writing sessions fit that load directly. Multi-week projects across eight subjects also make study skills worth considering, and middle school math follows the same CVUSD courses as every district middle school.
