Elementary Math Tutoring (K–5)
Elementary math tutoring is one-on-one or small-group teaching in the K–5 math a child's class covers, from counting and place value to fractions, measurement and word problems. At Thousand Acorns Tutoring, Adriana, a California-credentialed teacher, teaches every session herself, in your home, online or in a small group of 2–4. Tutoring is $80 an hour in your home or online, or $50 an hour per child in a group, and the first consultation is free.
What K–5 math covers, by grade
California's math standards set what public school students learn each year. These are the areas, called domains, that each grade works in, from the California Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:
| Grade | Domains | In plain words |
|---|---|---|
| Kindergarten | Counting and Cardinality; Operations and Algebraic Thinking; Number and Operations in Base Ten; Measurement and Data; Geometry | Counting, early adding and subtracting, numbers 11 to 19 as tens and ones, comparing and sorting, shapes |
| 1st and 2nd grade | Operations and Algebraic Thinking; Number and Operations in Base Ten; Measurement and Data; Geometry | Adding and subtracting with strategies, place value to the hundreds, measuring, time, data, shapes |
| 3rd to 5th grade | The same four, plus Number and Operations—Fractions | Multiplication and division, multi-digit work and decimals, fractions as numbers, area and volume |
Fractions are the new domain in 3rd grade, and they stay through 5th. The guide to fractions in grades 3–5 explains why they're hard.
How she teaches math
In her words: "Everything is different per student and the grade they are in, but I will focus on whatever hands-on training and education they will need to get ahead." Her sessions are hands-on and keep students engaged, with positive reinforcement and connections to real life.
A private tutor or a learning center
Families here usually compare three kinds of math help:
- Kumon charges $170–$190 per subject per month at its local centers, plus an $80 registration fee, and teaches its own program.
- Mathnasium has six local centers. None publishes prices; they describe a "flat monthly membership".
- Sylvan's local centers charge $44–$64 a session on monthly plans.
A private tutor can work one-on-one, or in a small group, from your child's own schoolwork, at home or online. Prices above are from each provider's own page, opened October 13, 2026. The comparison guide has more.
When families usually start
- Back to school. In 2026–27, CVUSD and Las Virgenes started on August 19, and Oak Park on August 5.
- After fall conferences. CVUSD elementary conferences are October 12–16, 2026. Several Las Virgenes elementary schools hold theirs November 16–20.
- Before spring testing. Students in grades 3–5 take the CAASPP math test in spring. CVUSD says its window "begins in March and concludes the last day of school."
- In 5th grade, before middle school. Each district places 6th graders differently:
- CVUSD 5th graders can take the 6th Grade Math Challenge Exam in June. In 2026, a score of 83% or better meant Math 7 Honors as a 6th grader.
- Las Virgenes sets the 6th-grade math level with a placement test at the end of 5th grade.
- Oak Park places every 6th grader in Math 6.
Thousand Acorns Tutoring does not offer placement exam prep. These are the districts' published rules.
Progress
At the end of every session, she goes over with you what your child covered, so you know what they're supposed to be learning. Tutoring can't guarantee a grade, a test score or a placement.
