Writing Tutoring for Grades K–8
Writing tutoring is one-on-one or small-group teaching for kindergarten through 8th grade, from first sentences and paragraphs to middle school essays. At Thousand Acorns Tutoring, Adriana, a California-credentialed teacher, teaches every session herself, in your home, online or in a small group of 2–4. Tutoring is $80 an hour in your home or online, or $50 an hour per child in a group, and the first consultation is free.
What K–8 writing covers, by grade
California's standards name three kinds of writing every year. In K–5 they're opinion pieces, informative or explanatory texts, and narratives (California English standards). From 6th grade, opinion pieces become arguments that support a claim (grade 6 writing standards).
| Grades | Kinds of writing | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| K–2 | Opinion, informative, narrative | Drawing, telling and writing; then sentences with details and an order |
| 3–5 | Opinion pieces with reasons, informative and explanatory texts, narratives | Paragraphs, linking words, a clear opening and ending |
| 6–8 | Arguments that support claims, informative and explanatory texts, narratives | Claims with evidence, organized essays, citing sources |
The same standards include grammar, spelling and punctuation, under the Language strand.
How she teaches writing
In her words: "Everything is different per student and the grade they are in, but I will focus on whatever hands-on training and education they will need to get ahead." Her sessions are hands-on and keep students engaged, with positive reinforcement and connections to real life.
When families usually start
- When writing homework turns into a nightly fight, or a blank page stays blank.
- In 3rd grade, when one paragraph becomes several.
- In 6th grade, when essays have to argue a claim with evidence.
- Before honors English. In Las Virgenes, honors English and social science in 7th and 8th grade use CAASPP results ("Standard Exceeded"), a STAR Reading score at the 80th percentile or higher, and a teacher nomination (LVUSD).
Progress
At the end of every session, she goes over with you what your child covered, so you know what they're supposed to be learning. Tutoring can't guarantee a grade or a placement.
