Two ways into GATE testing

Route Who When, 2026–27 Test
Spring screening Every 2nd grader, unless a parent opts out Between late April and early June 2027; principals send opt-out information in March Naglieri General Ability Test (NGAT)
Referral Students in grades 4–12, and 3rd graders new to CVUSD who missed the spring screening. Parents refer; teachers may refer with a signed parent consent form. Referral by November 3, 2026; screening December 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027, at the student's own school NGAT for elementary students (on district devices); CogAT Screening Form for secondary students

The routes and dates are from CVUSD's GATE page, published October 9, 2026, and the test names are from the district's 2026–2027 GATE timeline. A parent referral can be printed and returned to the school or emailed to the GATE office.

Who qualifies

A student qualifies with a score at or above the 95th percentile, either overall or in verbal, quantitative or nonverbal ability. Referred students in grades 6–11 who don't reach the 95th percentile but show a strong verbal, quantitative or nonverbal score take the matching full CogAT sections in the first two weeks of January. A placement committee makes the final decisions in mid-January, and letters with scores are mailed home after that.

For the spring screening of 2nd graders, each family gets a letter with scores by mail in the last week of school.

The 12-month rule for this year's 3rd graders

The testing platform requires at least 12 months between screenings. A 3rd grader who was screened in spring 2026 can't be screened again in the fall 2026 round. Their parents can submit a referral in 4th grade, by November 1, 2027.

What GATE looks like in CVUSD

  • Grades 3–5: identified students are clustered in at least one class per grade at each elementary school.
  • Middle and high school: identified students meet together in at least one honors or AP class each day.
  • Students moving in: a student identified as gifted in another district submits the prior eligibility letter and qualifying results, and the placement committee decides eligibility. Transfers are reviewed throughout the year.

The 2026–27 timeline

  • November 3, 2026: parent referral deadline.
  • From December 1, 2026: referred students are tested; screening runs to January 15, 2027.
  • First two weeks of January 2027: full CogAT sections for some referred students in grades 6–11.
  • Mid-January 2027: placement committee meets; letters with scores follow.
  • March 2027: principals send opt-out information for the 2nd-grade screening.
  • Late April to early June 2027: 2nd-grade screening.
  • Last week of school: screening letters mailed.

Other district dates for the year are in the CVUSD calendar guide.

If you live in Oak Park or Las Virgenes

  • Oak Park Unified: parents or staff refer a student with the GATE Identification Referral Form. Forms submitted on or before September 30 are considered in the current school year; later forms are reviewed after August of the following year. Each school has a GATE coordinator, and the district's GATE page doesn't post the grades screened or the qualifying scores.
  • Las Virgenes Unified: GATE is a self-contained middle school program at A.E. Wright Middle School in Calabasas, starting in 6th grade (A.E. Wright GATE). Parents start with the GATE Testing Request Form; a district school psychologist gives a one-on-one IQ test of about 30 minutes. For the 2027–28 program, LVUSD 5th graders are assessed at their own schools during the first semester of 2026–27, and letters go out in January. Students at schools that feed Lindero Canyon also need a School of Choice permit to attend GATE at A.E. Wright (admission).
