The three 6th-grade math courses
| Course | What it covers | How a student gets in |
|---|---|---|
| Math 6 College Prep (6CP) | The 6th-grade standards | No prerequisite |
| Math 6 Honors (6H) | All 6th-grade standards plus some 7th-grade standards | Multiple measures: 5th-grade math grades, the 5th-grade end-of-course exam score and the 5th-grade state math test (SBAC) score |
| Math 7 Honors (7H) | Skips the 6th-grade standards: 7th-grade standards plus selected 8th-grade standards, preparing students for Algebra 1 Honors | Only by passing the 6th Grade Math Challenge Exam with 83% or better |
That's the 2026–27 structure in CVUSD's 2026 letter on 6th grade mathematics, from Shane Frank, the district's Director of Middle School Education. The letter also lists Math 6 SAI and Math 6 Essentials, which are special-education settings: a student's IEP team decides that placement.
It applies to every CVUSD student starting 6th grade, at Colina, Los Cerritos, Redwood and Sequoia middle schools and at the TK–8 Sycamore Canyon School.
How Math 6 Honors placement is decided
The 2026 letter names three measures and no cutoff: the student's 5th-grade math grades, the 5th-grade end-of-course exam score, and the score on the 5th-grade state math test (the SBAC, part of CAASPP). CVUSD's CAASPP page says its testing window begins in March and ends on the last day of school.
The district's undated online course directory describes Math 6 Honors differently: A's and B's in 5th-grade math both semesters, plus 83% or higher on a "District Benchmark Exam." This guide follows the 2026 letter, the newer document. If the two seem to point different ways for your child, the district says questions go to the assistant principal at your child's middle school (Middle School Education).
The 6th Grade Math Challenge Exam
The Challenge Exam is for current 5th graders who want to skip 6th-grade math. Here is what the 2026 letter says, and what it leaves out.
| Detail | 2026 cycle |
|---|---|
| Who can take it | Current 5th graders |
| Passing score | "Students must score 83% or better to be eligible to take Math 7H as a 6th grade student." |
| Length | Two hours |
| Date and place | Monday, June 15, 2026, at Colina Middle School |
| Registration | Online at bit.ly/CVMathPlacement, "no later than May 15, 2026" |
| Not stated in the letter | The topics covered, start time, cost, retake or appeal rules, and study guides |
A student who doesn't take the exam, or doesn't reach 83%, is placed in Math 6CP or, if the three measures qualify them, Math 6 Honors. The letter suggests that a student headed for Math 7 Honors should have mastered arithmetic and be able to learn new skills quickly.
Where each 6th-grade course leads
| Path | 6th grade | 7th grade | 8th grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| College prep | Math 6CP | Math 7CP | Math 8CP, or Algebra 1 CP after a Boost Exam or Boost Camp |
| Honors | Math 6 Honors | Math 7 Honors | Algebra 1 Honors |
| Challenge | Math 7 Honors | Algebra 1 Honors (implied by the letters, not stated) | Geometry Honors, for high school credit |
Geometry Honors in 8th grade requires A's or B's in Algebra 1 Honors both semesters. It earns high school credit that counts in the high school GPA, and it's taught at the middle school or virtually through a CVUSD high school, depending on enrollment (course directory).
Students aren't locked in. The notes on the district's Math Flow Chart (updated March 27, 2026) say the pathways shown are typical, not required, and that students may move between them from year to year based on performance, teacher recommendation and counselor review. The two Boost Exams are the published ways to move up: how the Boost Exams and Boost Camps work. For help with the math itself, not the exams, see math tutoring in Thousand Oaks.
Dates for families of 5th graders this year
As of October 13, 2026, CVUSD hasn't posted the 2027 Challenge Exam date or registration window; the Middle School Education page still links only the 2026 letters. Last cycle's timing is the best guide to what to expect:
- Late March 2026: the letters were posted (the files are dated March 26, 2026).
- May 15, 2026: registration deadline for the Challenge Exam and both Boost Exams.
- June 15, 2026: Challenge Exam at Colina Middle School.
- Spring: the 5th-grade state math test, one of the three Math 6 Honors measures.
Other 2026–27 dates, from the first day to spring break, are in the CVUSD calendar guide. To check where your child stands in grade-level math before spring, the Algebra 1 readiness guide lists the skills the middle school sequence builds on. Questions parents ask
Can my child skip 6th-grade math in CVUSD?
Only through the 6th Grade Math Challenge Exam. A current 5th grader who scores 83% or better can take Math 7 Honors in 6th grade. In 2026 the exam was on June 15 at Colina Middle School, and registration closed May 15.
What is the difference between Math 6 Honors and Math 7 Honors?
Math 6 Honors covers all of the 6th-grade standards plus some 7th-grade standards. Math 7 Honors skips the 6th-grade standards and covers the 7th-grade standards plus selected 8th-grade standards, leading to Algebra 1 Honors.
Did CVUSD rename Math 6A and 7A?
The 2026 letters use Math 6 Honors (6H) and Math 7 Honors (7H) and never mention 6A or 7A. The older "Accelerated" names survive only in the course directory's prerequisite text, and the district hasn't said whether anything changed besides the names.
Is there a way into Math 7 Honors after 6th grade?
Yes. A Math 6CP student can move to Math 7 Honors for 7th grade by scoring 70% or higher on the 6CP to 7H Boost Exam, or by earning 80% in the district's summer Boost Camp.
When are the 2027 Challenge Exam dates?
Not posted as of October 13, 2026. In 2026 the letters were posted in late March, registration closed May 15 and the exam was in mid-June.
