The two Boost Exams
| Exam | Who takes it | What it covers | To pass | What passing earns |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Math 6CP to 7H Boost Exam | 6th graders in Math 6CP | The Math 7CP course | 70% or higher | Math 7 Honors in 7th grade |
| Math 7CP to Algebra 1 CP Boost Exam | 7th graders in Math 7CP | The whole Math 8CP course | 70% or higher | Algebra 1 CP in 8th grade, skipping Math 8CP |
These are the rules in CVUSD's two 2026 letters (6CP to 7H, 7CP to Algebra 1 CP). Both letters add the same conditions:
- A student may take only one Boost Exam per year, and space is limited.
- Study guides are provided before the exam dates.
- Families register online at bit.ly/CVMathPlacement.
- Neither letter states a cost or a start time for the exams.
Without a Boost, a student stays on the college-prep track. The district's flow chart doesn't allow a move from Math 6CP straight to Math 7 Honors, and a Math 7CP student takes Math 8CP in 8th grade unless they pass the Boost Exam or Boost Camp.
The exams are given at a CVUSD middle school but apply to students at all five: Colina, Los Cerritos, Redwood, Sequoia and Sycamore Canyon.
The 2026 dates
| Step | 2026 |
|---|---|
| Registration deadline | May 15, 2026 |
| Boost Exam dates | Monday, June 15, 2026 or Friday, July 31, 2026 |
| Exam location | Colina Middle School, 1500 E. Hillcrest Dr., Thousand Oaks |
| Boost Camps | July 6–31, 2026; the 6CP to 7H camp is at Colina, and campers in both camps take the exam at Colina on July 31 |
Dates and places change from year to year. In 2025 the 7CP to Algebra 1 CP exam was at Redwood Middle School, on June 16 or July 29, with registration due May 16, 2025 (2025 letter). As of October 13, 2026, CVUSD hasn't posted the 2027 letters; its Middle School Education page still links the 2026 ones. In 2026 the letter files are dated March 26, about seven weeks before the registration deadline.
The summer Boost Camps
Each Boost Exam has a matching summer course. The letters describe both camps as free and in person.
| Camp | 2026 schedule | Who can enroll | How a camper passes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Math 6CP to 7H Boost Camp | July 6–31, 8:30–11:00 am | Math 6CP students with A's or B's in the Semester 1 marking period; other families may submit a request form | 80% in the course, which includes the Boost Exam; otherwise 70% or higher on the exam |
| Math 7CP to Algebra 1 CP Boost Camp | July 6–31, 8:30–11:50 am | Math 7CP students with A's or B's in the Semester 1 marking period; other families may submit a request form | An overall camp grade of 80%, including the Boost Exam; otherwise 70% or higher on the exam |
Campers take the Boost Exam on July 31, the last day of camp. Space is limited in both camps, and camp registration had the same May 15, 2026 deadline as the exams.
How a Boost changes the middle school sequence
| Starting point | Without a Boost | With a Boost |
|---|---|---|
| Math 6CP in 6th grade | Math 7CP, then Math 8CP | Math 7 Honors in 7th grade, then Algebra 1 Honors in 8th |
| Math 7CP in 7th grade | Math 8CP in 8th grade | Algebra 1 CP in 8th grade |
The course directory describes Algebra 1 CP in 8th grade as an accelerated course that covers both Math 8CP and Algebra standards (course directory). The notes on the district's Math Flow Chart say the pathways shown are typical, not required, and that students can move between them based on performance, teacher recommendation and counselor review.
How 6th-grade placement works in the first place, including the 83% Challenge Exam into Math 7 Honors, is in the CVUSD 6th-grade placement guide. Whether a student is ready for Algebra-level work is a separate question from passing an exam; the Algebra 1 readiness guide lists the skills it builds on.
Who to ask
CVUSD's Middle School Education page says questions about placement go to the assistant principal at your child's middle school. Ask there about the 2027 dates, whether a request form for camp is worth sending, and how the exam result will be shared with you.
Thousand Acorns Tutoring does not offer placement exam prep. This guide explains the district's published rules.
Questions parents ask
What score passes a CVUSD Boost Exam?
70% or higher, on both the 6CP to 7H exam and the 7CP to Algebra 1 CP exam (2026 letters). In a Boost Camp, a camper who earns 80% in the course passes; otherwise the camper needs 70% on the Boost Exam.
Can a student take both Boost Exams in the same year?
No. The 2026 letters allow one Boost Exam per year, and space is limited.
Can my child move from Math 6CP to Math 7 Honors without a Boost Exam?
Not under the district's flow chart, which doesn't allow a move from 6CP straight to 7H. The published routes are the 6CP to 7H Boost Exam and the Boost Camp.
Where are the Boost Exams given?
In 2026, at Colina Middle School in Thousand Oaks, on June 15 or July 31. In 2025 the 7CP exam was at Redwood Middle School, so check each spring's letter for the place.
Do the Boost Exams cost anything?
The 2026 letters don't state a cost for either exam. They describe both Boost Camps as free.
