The three 6th-grade levels

The district's Middle School Honors page names three levels for 6th-grade math: Math 6, Math 6 High and Math 6 Accelerated. Its FAQ explains how students land in one:

  • "Math has levels based on the math placement test given at the end of 5th grade or upon enrollment."
  • "Math levels are assigned according to placement tests and teacher referrals."

No score cutoffs are published, and the district hasn't posted an appeal or re-test process for math placement.

Who takes the placement test, and where

Student Where the test is given When
LVUSD 5th graders In their own elementary school's 5th-grade math class During 5th grade; the district says at the end of 5th grade
New students from outside the district The Lindero Canyon Middle School media center For fall 2026 entry: the week of June 15 and Tuesday, August 11, 2026, plus a date the Monday before school started

The details are from Lindero Canyon's important dates page for 2026–27, published January 14, 2026. For outside students, Lindero Canyon emails the invitation in late May or late July. Dates for fall 2027 entry weren't posted as of October 13, 2026.

LVUSD's elementary schools in Agoura Hills and Westlake Village are Sumac, Willow, Yerba Buena and White Oak.

Lindero Canyon's course flow

Lindero Canyon Middle School shows its math sequence only as an image on its mathematics page:

6th grade 7th grade 8th grade Next
Math 6 Math 7 Pre-Algebra Algebra 1
Math 6 Math 7 Algebra 1 Geometry

The image doesn't show how the three 6th-grade levels map onto this flow, and Lindero Canyon hasn't posted placement criteria of its own.

What A.C. Stelle publishes

A.C. Stelle Middle School, one of LVUSD's two middle schools in Calabasas, posts more detail than Lindero Canyon. These are A.C. Stelle's pages, last published in 2024, and may not describe how Lindero Canyon applies the rules:

  • 5th graders take the "LVUSD 5th grade placement test" in their classroom in March, and placement also weighs progress in class and a teacher recommendation (mathematics placement).
  • Accelerated 6th-grade math needs "High achievement on the Las Virgenes 5th grade placement test," "an Excellent Grade in 5th grade math both semesters, and teacher recommendation" (course options).
  • 7th Accelerated needs an A in 6th-grade accelerated math both semesters and/or a teacher recommendation; Algebra Honors in 8th grade needs an A in 7th-grade accelerated math both semesters and/or a teacher recommendation.
  • To keep a level, a student finishes the current course with an A or B.
  • A.C. Stelle may give the UCLA Pre-Algebra or Algebra placement test in May of 6th, 7th and 8th grade.

The same page says an honors course in middle school isn't necessary for AP courses in high school.

Mariposa School

Mariposa School of Global Education, LVUSD's TK–8 school in Agoura Hills, teaches math daily with the Bridges curriculum in grades 1–5 and College Preparatory Mathematics (CPM) in grades 6–8 (Mariposa). It hasn't posted middle-grade math levels or placement rules.

Honors English and social science

LVUSD's honors program in grades 7–8 is for English language arts and social science, not math. The published criteria include consistently advanced in-class writing, "Standard Exceeded" on the English CAASPP test, and the 80th percentile or higher on Renaissance STAR Reading. Teachers nominate students, an honors committee decides, and staying in honors takes "a 'B' (80%) or higher" each semester (Middle School Honors). GATE is separate: a self-contained program at A.E. Wright Middle School in Calabasas, described in the GATE guide.

Thousand Acorns Tutoring does not offer placement exam prep. This guide explains the district's published rules.

Questions parents ask

When do LVUSD 5th graders take the math placement test?

The district says the test is given at the end of 5th grade, and Lindero Canyon says LVUSD 5th graders take it in their own school's 5th-grade math class. A.C. Stelle Middle School in Calabasas says its incoming students are tested in March.

What score is needed for Math 6 Accelerated?

Las Virgenes Unified doesn't publish a cutoff. Levels are assigned from the placement test and teacher referrals.

Is there honors math in LVUSD middle schools?

Math is leveled rather than called honors: Math 6, Math 6 High and Math 6 Accelerated in 6th grade. The district's FAQ says there's no honors science, and its honors program in grades 7–8 covers English and social science.

We're moving into LVUSD. How does my child get placed?

Students entering Lindero Canyon from outside the district take the math placement test there. For fall 2026 entry, the dates were the week of June 15 and August 11, with another date the Monday before school started. Dates for fall 2027 aren't posted yet.
