Grades 6–8: Middle School Math, English and Placement

What 6th, 7th and 8th graders learn in math and English, and how CVUSD, Oak Park and Las Virgenes place middle schoolers in math and Algebra 1.

Math in grades 6–8

Sixth and 7th grade share five domains: Ratios and Proportional Relationships, The Number System, Expressions and Equations, Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. Eighth grade replaces ratios with Functions (grade 6, grade 7, grade 8). The big ideas, year by year:

  • 6th: ratios and rates, dividing fractions, negative numbers, and equations with variables.
  • 7th: proportional relationships and percents, operations with all rational numbers, and linear equations.
  • 8th: linear equations and systems, functions, and the Pythagorean Theorem.

English in grades 6–8

From 6th grade, the opinion pieces of elementary school become arguments: students "write arguments to support claims," along with informative texts and narratives (grade 6 writing standards). Essays need evidence, and research writing needs sources.

What's tested in grades 6–8

CAASPP English and math tests every spring, and the California Science Test in 8th grade (CVUSD). Placement tests depend on the district: CVUSD's Boost Exams in June and July, and Oak Park's Algebra Readiness test and MDTP in March or April. The score report guide explains CAASPP results.
