About Brookside
Brookside Elementary describes itself as the first school established in Oak Park Unified (Brookside). The district's history page says it was completed in 1968, while Oak Park was still part of the Simi Valley Unified School District (OPUSD history). Today it teaches about 558 students from TK through 5th grade on Satinwood Avenue (Ed-Data), and its About page lists it as a California Distinguished School and a National Blue Ribbon School, without years.
Students are the Brookside Tigers, and the school's purpose statement is "Growing the Hearts and Minds of ALL Brookside Tigers." The campus has an Organic Garden and Earth Sciences Exploratory outdoor classroom, the Kingsmen Shakespeare Company visits every year, and students can join after-school drama productions (Brookside).
Start and end times differ by grade: TK runs 8:00 am to noon, kindergarten 8:15 am to 1:15 pm, grades 1–3 8:20 am to 2:30 pm and grades 4–5 8:20 am to 2:56 pm, with an early release every Wednesday. Club Oak Park provides before- and after-school care (handbook). Brookside students continue to Medea Creek Middle School (MCMS enrollment).

Subjects that fit Brookside students
Shakespeare visits and after-school drama put scripts in Brookside students' hands, and reading a part aloud is fluency practice. Reading and phonics and writing sessions build the same skills. On the math side, Oak Park's Algebra I decision comes in 6th grade at Medea Creek, but it rests on fractions, decimals and multi-step problems from 4th and 5th grade, which elementary math sessions cover.
