What Kids Learn in Kindergarten Through 2nd Grade
What California kindergartners, 1st graders and 2nd graders learn in math and reading, the yearly reading screening, and the 2nd-grade GATE screening in CVUSD.
Math in K–2
Kindergarten adds a domain the later grades don't have, Counting and Cardinality: counting, knowing that the last number counted is how many, and comparing groups. All three grades work in Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Number and Operations in Base Ten, Measurement and Data, and Geometry (California math standards). By the end of 2nd grade, that means adding and subtracting with strategies, place value to the hundreds, measuring, telling time and reading simple graphs.
Reading and writing in K–2
The reading standards start with foundational skills (California English standards):
- Print concepts and phonological awareness (hearing, blending and splitting the sounds in words) in kindergarten and 1st grade.
- Phonics and word recognition and fluency from kindergarten on.
Writing covers the same three kinds of writing all the way to 5th grade: opinion, informative and narrative. Children start by drawing and telling, then move to sentences.
What's tested in K–2
- Reading-difficulty screening, every year. Since 2025–26, California public schools screen K–2 students for risk of reading difficulties, including dyslexia. Kindergartners aren't screened before the 91st school day. Parents are told at least 15 days before, get the results within 45 days, and can opt out in writing (Education Code section 53008). The screening guide explains the results.
- GATE screening in 2nd grade (CVUSD). CVUSD screens every 2nd grader for GATE in spring, unless a parent opts out. In 2027 that falls between late April and early June, using the Naglieri General Ability Test. Results are mailed in the last week of school (CVUSD GATE). The GATE guide has the details. Thousand Acorns Tutoring does not offer GATE test prep.
- No CAASPP yet. State tests in English and math start in 3rd grade (CVUSD CAASPP page).
Signs to watch
The standards expect children to hear and blend the sounds in words in kindergarten and 1st grade, and to read grade-level text accurately and fluently by 2nd grade. A child who is well behind those expectations, or whose teacher raises it at conferences, may need more practice. The guides to reading at grade level and kindergarten readiness go further. Reading and phonics tutoring and elementary math tutoring start with a free consultation.
