Each is designed for a different job, and many families try more than one over the years. The questions that matter most are the same for all of them: who teaches, how many children are in a session, how long it lasts, what it costs per month with fees, and how you'll see progress. The guide to choosing a tutor lists them, and the local price guide compares every published price.

Where Thousand Acorns fits

Thousand Acorns Tutoring is a private tutoring business, so it's one of the options compared here. It's one teacher who teaches every session herself, for kindergarten through 8th grade, in your home, online or in a small group of 2 to 4, at $80 an hour in your home or online one-on-one or $50 an hour per child in a group. It doesn't offer preparation for standardized or placement tests, science tutoring or high school tutoring.

Questions parents ask about these options

What's the difference between Kumon and Mathnasium?

Kumon is a worksheet-based program in math and reading in which students work through material on their own from a starting point set by a placement test. Mathnasium teaches math only, building a learning plan from a diagnostic assessment, with instructors working face to face and time for school homework. Both start with a free assessment; Kumon publishes tuition at five local centers, while Mathnasium's local centers don't publish prices.

Which of these teach reading?

Kumon has a reading program, Sylvan teaches reading and writing among other subjects, and a private tutor may teach reading. Mathnasium teaches math only.

Does Sylvan publish its prices?

Yes. All three local Sylvan centers, in Westlake Village, Simi Valley and Camarillo, publish per-session price grids, from $44 to $66 per session depending on the plan and sessions per week, plus a one-time registration fee.

Is a private tutor better than a learning center?

It depends on the goal. A center offers a set program and schedule; a private tutor can work from your child's own class, homework and upcoming tests, and some come to your home. Compare who teaches, group size, session length and total monthly cost.
